In California, families are required to have a properly installed car seat to leave the hospital with newborn children. A well-intended policy, this requirement impacts families who do not know about this requirement or may not be able to afford car seats that meet safety standards. Too often, nurses pool together extra cash to get patients the needed car seats. Although Medicaid offers car seat assistance for qualifying families, these supplemental benefits are now at risk.
Safe Seats aims to fill the gap left by funding cuts to promote child passenger safety. The program provides high-quality infant, convertible, and booster car seats to families in need across Lake, Napa, Solano, Sonoma, and Yolo counties through a partnership between The Rachel and Eric Jones Foundation and community organizations in Northern California.
